A Circular Economy & Speculative Design Project- ReLoop
Parsons School of Design, Strategic Design Group Project, 2024

ReLoop is a speculative design project that looks at how circular economy principles could transform food systems. It imagines a future where food waste is close to zero, surplus food is redistributed, and individuals, businesses, and governments are guided by transparent, data-driven insights.

 What is ReLoop?

ReLoop is a government-supported mobile and web application designed to reduce food waste, encourage sustainable habits, and fight food inequality. It uses AI, IoT, and data analytics to track food consumption patterns, monitor household inventories, and provide real-time insights.

Food Waste Rating (FWR) System

Through its Food Waste Rating (FWR) system, ReLoop scores individuals, businesses, and food providers based on their waste, donations, and consumption behaviors. The app also redirects surplus food back into the system by connecting users with food banks and community kitchens, creating a transparent and fair food network.

How It Works

1. Scan Purchase
The user scans their grocery receipt to upload purchase details into the app.
2. Add to Inventory
Items are added to a smart inventory list, ready to be tracked.

3. Smart Storage
The app and IoT devices monitor fridge contents, freshness, and expiry dates.

4. Recipe Suggestions
The app suggests recipes to use items before they expire.

5. Waste Detection
The system tracks discarded food, updating the user’s waste score.
6. Donation
Surplus food is identified and the app guides the user to nearby food banks.
7. FWR Score & Rewards
The user receives an updated Food Waste Rating score and rewards for sustainable behavior.

Features

  1. Real-time FWR Score: Users track their food waste performance.
  2. Smart Inventory & Recipe Suggestions: Keeps food fresh and helps reduce waste.
  3. Donation Map: Connects users with nearby food banks.
  4. Leaderboard & Rewards: Encourages sustainable habits through friendly competition.
